Performance metrics keep you on track

Sustainability and energy efficiency remain key buzzwords within the facility management and building services industries. As a society we are under no illusion as to why we should reduce our energy consumption and effectively manage our waste, however understanding how to do this for the built environment is an issue that companies continue to grapple with.

The starting point is to look at the performance of your property, but without an accessible view of your technical systems and a benchmark to compare data against, this becomes a futile task. High level assessments are needed so that efforts to improve energy consumption can prove they add real value, thereby encouraging further work towards sustainability. Performance metrics are hot property.

Here at Sowga, we're experts in the installation and maintenance of hard services, helping our clients maximise the performance of their buildings and safeguarding the life of their assets. We're adept at helping companies gain greater visibility into their running costs and environmental credentials.

Conducting a Building Performance Evaluation has never been more important. Put simply, this is a methodology by which to measure and monitor your plant operations. The information then helps to set targets and look at ways to improve systems through maintenance and upgrades. We believe it is important to empower Facility Managers with the right data for a true picture.

Our evaluation methods address key performance indicators such as:

  • Running costs, of the building as a whole and for individual systems
  • Comparable data for national averages
  • Reliability of technical systems
  • Environmental impact, including water and energy usage across heating, air conditioning etc
  • Occupancy feedback and evaluation
  • Indoor air quality

Once armed with these metrics, the results can be surprising. The industry's desire to 'do better' when it comes to energy efficiency doesn't always translate into real improvements - how a building is predicted to perform is often far from the real picture. The term 'performance gap' is now a commonly used phrase, indicating the extent to which buildings are still failing to reach the energy savings they were designed to achieve.

By quantifying the difference between perceived performance and reality, recommendations can be made to close the gap, help improve operations and provide a better living and working space for the people inside.

Our team has years of experience when it comes to auditing performance and helping companies make sense of the metrics. The data is then used to provide a series of recommendations to improve operations. Our engineers can advise on the best solutions, from installing a Building and Energy Management System (BEMS) to tweaking existing settings for better efficiency, placing our clients in control of their buildings.
