As a Mobile Maintenance Engineer at Sowga, the type of work Dean will carry out varies from day to day, consisting of PPM tasks and reactive works on the various sites within his portfolio, located in Commercial office buildings up and down the M25 corridor and beyond, stretching from Reading to Southampton.
The skillsets required for these tasks are wide reaching, with the ability to complete electrical, heating, cooling, plumbing and even ACOP L8 water hygiene tasks to ensure that buildings are compliant and running efficiently. Dean always aims to be onsite at his first job by 8am every morning. He receives a full list of SFG20 compliant PPM's and any reactive tasks which need completing via our job management software simPRO. The tasks are accessed and completed via his smartphone then automatically submitted to our helpdesk. For Dean, the days are busy, however this is something that he relishes as he is not one for sitting around.
Having been in this profession for over 20 years, Dean knows what is needed to excel in his role, understanding the importance of the client facing side of the business and using this to build a rapport with the customer with a focus around great communication and commitment.
Dean believes in long term satisfaction and relationships, seeing this side of his job as an integral factor just as important as ensuring the sites under his supervision are running optimally.
For Dean, the COVID-19 crisis has brought about challenges, but there have also been some benefits. For our mobile engineering teams still visiting sites, journey times have reduced by as much as 30%, and with the buildings being unoccupied, the amount of reactive calls has decreased meaning that engineers like Dean can focus on planned maintenance which has also been made easier due to previously hard to reach places on site now being easily accessed due to the site being empty. Some of our clients have also requested Statutory PPM be undertaken only, allowing Dean to focus his efforts on ensuring that the buildings critical assets on his sites are maintained during this lockdown. The main challenge that Dean has encountered, with such a personal focus on client engagement and the sociable aspects of his role, is the lack of interaction with people on site, communicating with people through email and phone calls rather than the personability of face to face conversations.
Dean is a very active individual, not spending his downtime watching TV, he likes to keep himself busy with hobbies such as tinkering with his Moto X bike, playing football or completing general DIY, with his pockets full of favours from spending his time helping out friends and family with the various issues they may have around their homes. To truly relax and unwind, Dean enjoys spending time with his family and having a drink or town in his local enjoying the pub garden on sunny evenings – hopefully it won't be too long until he can enjoy that again!
As someone who has always taken pride in their work, be it in a practical sense or simply getting the most out of his day, Dean goes home satisfied knowing that everyone he has worked alongside that day is appreciative of his efforts. Having worked in a large international company for a very long time previously, often feeling under-appreciated, we're pleased that Dean has found a home in Sowga, where his efforts are always acknowledged for a job well done, and we all agree with his sentiments around this being the best way to get the most out of the team.
